Workshops

We offer half-day, full-day, and 2-day workshops.
Please note: Most workshops are scheduled during the summer and on Saturdays.

Half-day workshops provide an overview of the DBQ Project process. Teachers go through all the steps of teaching a DBQ by doing one as a group. Each step of the teaching and thinking process is covered in an interactive way. Teachers walk through the DBQ Project’s 6-Step method. Special attention is given to the question, “How can we promote clear thinking and analysis in our own classrooms?”

Full-day workshops go further by discussing the transition from document analysis to essay writing. Elements of a good essay are discussed in depth, and special attention is given to a variety of writing supports embedded in the Program. Participants also spend time analyzing student work and norming student essays using our DBQ Project Rubric.

Two-Day workshops extend the first day discussion by looking more closely at what we mean by “good analysis”. Teachers walk through a series of exercises on critical thinking and discuss ways to promote meta-cognition; we want students to be able to explain what they are doing when they examine source lines, work on factual accuracy, extract the main idea, make inferences, establish point of view, and cluster documents by analytical category.  In the second part of day two, teachers walk through a DBQ of their choice and create a personalized implementation plan for their course.
