About The DBQ Project

The DBQ Project was started in 2000 to help teachers help students read with understanding, think straight, and write clearly. The Project took root in our positive experience with the document based question exercise in the Advanced Placement History tests offered every May. The Project seeks to create materials that democratize the DBQ experience making it available to a wide range of high school and middle school students.

The founders and the principal authors of The DBQ Project are Phil Roden and Chip Brady.

Phil grew up in Shorewood, Wisconsin, graduated from Yale University, and taught in the Peace Corps in Nigeria. After teaching five years at Marshall High School on Chicago’s West Side, he taught at Northwestern University. In the 1970s he moved to Evanston Township High School where he taught in the History and Social Science Department for 22 years. He is also author of two US History textbooks, Life and Liberty, and Promise of America, both published by Scott Foresman.

Chip grew up in Evanston, Illinois, graduated from Brown University, and traded options at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Since completing a History masters program at Northwestern University in 1990, he has taught in the History and Social Science Department at his alma mater, Evanston Township High School.
